A Canadian shelf pusher manufacturer since 1997: why buy direct
By Mathieu St-Germain
When retailers equip their shelves, they think about the outcome first: readable prices, front-facing products, rows that hold up until closing time. The question of who actually makes the parts tends to come up later, on the day a package changes size.
Concept P.O.S. is a Canadian manufacturer based in Repentigny, Quebec, and active since 1997. The company designs, manufactures and distributes retail shelf equipment: moldings and pushers made in Repentigny, rounded out by a line of accessories.
Here is, concretely, what buying direct changes for a retailer, and the questions worth asking any supplier before you order.
A Canadian manufacturer as your direct contact
Buying direct from the manufacturer is, first of all, a matter of conversation: there is no intermediary between you and the team that makes the moldings and pushers. Your inside shelf measurements, the size and weight of one unit and the number of facings you want reach the people who work out the configuration, with no reseller passing them along.
That closeness matters most when the answer is not obvious: a shelf deeper than usual, a soft pouch that slumps, a tall carton that tips over. These are manufacturing questions, better settled directly with those who design the components.
Buying direct does not replace your measurements or your knowledge of the aisle. It simply brings your question closer to the person able to answer it.
When standard parts do not fit
Many needs are met with standard parts kept in stock. When the product format or the shelf falls outside the norm, Concept P.O.S. produces custom parts: pushers are adjusted to the exact dimensions of the merchandise and to the available depth, and moldings are adapted to particular shelf edges.
Take two hypothetical examples. For a pharmacy that wants to organize small, light items in a tight space, the Compact, translucent and spring-driven, can be cut to width up to 48 in, with tracks of no more than 22 in. In an aisle of canned goods and jars, the Robusta instead holds packaged merchandise, even heavy items, on 2 in or 2.5 in bases that reach up to 24 in deep.
Custom work has its limits too. Beyond the documented dimensions, a configuration has to be validated rather than extrapolated. If a product does not suit the model you had in mind, the team can recommend another one instead of forcing the first choice. Some merchandise, such as heavy liquid jugs or vehicle batteries, should never be pushed at all: it is organized with dividers and label holders. Our article on choosing between spring and pull-tab shelf pushers walks through each option.
Three product lines from one supplier
Concept P.O.S. offers three lines designed to work together on the same shelf:
- Price-display moldings: self-adhesive, slide-in C-Channel and Super-C, wire-shelf or flexible, with or without a window, in several heights, including the Flipscan, Fit-Grip, Multifit and Top-Tape families, plus an angle corrector.
- Automatic-facing pushers: four models, Robusta, Blizzard, Compact and Prestige, with a spring or pull-tab mechanism depending on the case.
- Accessories: hooks, clips, fasteners, tapes, label holders, dividers (magnetic models included) and sign protectors.
Sourcing all three from a single supplier simplifies purchasing, with fewer companies to coordinate and separate orders to track. The setup also stays consistent from one store to the next, which makes reorders easier for a multi-location retailer. The page on our four automatic-facing pusher models gives a short overview of each.
More than twenty-five years in retail aisles
Since 1997, Concept P.O.S. has equipped supermarkets, grocers, hardware retailers, home-improvement centers, pharmacies, convenience stores and mass merchants. Each of these settings has its own constraints. Refrigerated cases and freezers call for the Blizzard; busy dry-goods aisles, the Robusta; small, frequently handled items in pharmacies and supermarkets, the Prestige.
The company also works for product manufacturers and teams up with marketing agencies as a manufacturing partner, including on display projects. The agency designs the campaign; Concept P.O.S. produces the equipment that helps it last in the store, namely pushers, dividers and label holders. That production can be white-label when needed. Our page for advertising and marketing agency projects describes how that collaboration works.
Finally, Concept P.O.S. serves Canada and the United States, not only Quebec.
Questions to ask any shelf-equipment supplier
Whether you work with Concept P.O.S. or another company, these questions help you understand what you are buying and who will answer once the order is placed.
- Who makes the part? Knowing whether you are dealing with the manufacturer or a reseller tells you who will handle technical questions.
- Can it be made to my dimensions? Ask what information the supplier needs. A serious approach relies on the inside measurements of the shelf (width, depth, available height), the size and weight of one unit, the number of facings and a photo of the current display.
- Who answers when a format changes? A redesigned package, a taller bottle, a new flavour: you need to know which part gets adjusted and who supplies it.
- Can moldings, pushers and accessories come from one place? If not, plan to check for yourself that components from several sources fit together.
- Will the supplier tell you when a product should not be pushed? A frank answer about limits is worth more than a setup that struggles in its first week.
