Planning a shelf upgrade project, step by step

By Mathieu St-Germain

Empty fronts, flavours spilling into the next lane, a price tag nobody can read: your aisle could work harder, but where do you begin? A shelf upgrade project does not call for a major renovation; it moves forward in steps, starting from what you already see on the sales floor.

Concept P.O.S., a Canadian company based in Repentigny, Quebec, has designed, manufactured and distributed price-display moldings, automatic-facing pushers and shelf accessories since 1997. Here is how a project with our team unfolds, from your first walk down the aisle until your own staff installs the parts, and what to prepare.

Step 1: Spot what is not working

Before you reach for a tape measure, walk the aisle at a busy moment, late in the afternoon for example, and note what shoppers actually see. Three symptoms come up often, each tied to a product family:

  • The front of the row is bare while stock waits at the back: that is a job for automatic-facing pushers.
  • Lanes get mixed up: one item put back in the wrong spot drags others along, which is where dividers come in.
  • The price is hard to read, crooked or unrelated to the item sitting behind it: moldings and label holders need a second look.

Next, pick a single section to start with, ideally the one your staff refaces most often. Also flag any merchandise that should never be pushed, such as heavy liquid jugs or vehicle batteries: dividers and label holders are enough to organize those. To go further, read our article on keeping products visible on the shelf.

Step 2: Measure and photograph the section

A pusher configuration is built on real dimensions: at Concept P.O.S., an item's compatibility is checked against measurements, never taken on faith from a description. Grab a tape measure and a phone, then gather:

  • the inside dimensions of the shelf: width, depth and available height below the level above;
  • the dimensions and weight of a single unit of each product involved;
  • the number of facings you want;
  • the total count of shelves or sections to equip;
  • your mechanism preference, spring or pull-tab;
  • photos of the current display, taken from the front and the side;
  • for cans, the formats you carry and the number of flavours to present.

Not sure which mechanism to pick? The calibrated spring keeps merchandise advancing nonstop, a good match for fast-selling products; the pull-tab brings the whole lane forward in one motion, whenever you decide, and fits restocking done in rounds. Our comparison of spring and pull-tab shelf pushers covers both options, and the team can make the call with you. Keep your photos: they will let you compare before and after.

Step 3: Talk through your aisle with the team

Then reach us by phone, by email or via the quote form on our product pages. A team member reviews your request, gets back to you, then recommends the components that suit your merchandise: bases, dividers, retaining strips, support plates and label holders.

If your products fall outside a model's range, the team directs you to another one instead of forcing your merchandise into it: the Robusta for packaged goods, even heavy and bulky ones, in high-traffic aisles; the Blizzard for coolers and freezers; the Prestige or the Compact for small formats.

Step 4: A quote for standard or custom parts

The quote turns that recommendation into a list of components: standard stock parts or custom manufacturing, depending on your products. Custom work fits pushers to the product format and available depth, or adapts a molding to a particular shelf.

It can bring together all three Concept P.O.S. lines: price-display moldings (self-adhesive, slide-in, wire-shelf, flexible), automatic-facing pushers and accessories, from hooks to magnetic dividers. One supplier means fewer purchase orders and a consistent setup. And you deal with Concept P.O.S. with no middleman: our article on buying direct from a Canadian manufacturer explains what that changes.

Steps 5 and 6: Order, install, then expand

Order, receive and install

Once the quote is accepted, you place the order, receive the parts and your staff installs them; our team follows up. Plan this work for a quiet moment, before opening for example; self-adhesive moldings need a clean surface. Then compare the result with your photos.

Start with a pilot section

For a network of stores or a long aisle, it is wise to equip a pilot section first. Picture a grocery store that begins with its canned-goods aisle: after a few restocking rounds, its employees can see what holds up well and which details need adjusting. The validated configuration then serves as a starting point for other aisles, once their measurements are checked.

Marketing agencies and product manufacturers

An agency designs the campaign or the display; as its manufacturing partner, we produce the spring or pull-tab pushers, dividers and label holders that keep the concept in order once it reaches the store.

The starting point barely differs from a retailer's: you send your client's brief, planogram or item list, the shelf dimensions and your timeline, and a clear quote follows. Production can be white-label or co-branded; for a multi-store rollout, a single specification yields identical components in every location. A manufacturer that wants its brand presented uniformly across a variety of stores follows the same path. Our page for advertising and marketing agencies describes this partnership.

Frequently asked questions

What should I send to get a quote?

The Step 2 list, especially the inside shelf measurements, the size and weight of one unit, and a photo of the current display. A complete picture lets the proposed configuration match your aisle closely.

Standard parts or custom manufacturing: who decides?

Your products and your shelves. A stock part does the job when it fits; otherwise, Concept P.O.S. builds custom, in the depth, width and finish your layout calls for.

Can you help me equip several stores?

Yes. Whether you equip one store or a full network, going through a single Canadian supplier gives your aisles a consistent look across locations. Validating a pilot section first remains a careful way to proceed.

Do you work with agencies and product manufacturers?

Yes. Marketing agencies entrust us with manufacturing the components of their displays and campaigns, and product manufacturers are also among our clients. Send the brief, planogram or item list: you will receive a clear quote, white-label if needed.

Get your shelf upgrade project started

A successful shelf upgrade project starts with a carefully chosen section, accurate dimensions and a frank conversation with the manufacturer. Gather your figures and photos, then call the Concept P.O.S. team at 1 (888) 422-0605, Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., write to sales@conceptpos.com or fill out the form on the Robusta shelf pusher system page. We will prepare a tailored quote, for standard or custom parts.
